Kolibri Theatre – foyer, outdoor performance

To make the city even more liveable, the focus is on citizen participation.
As surveyors, the audience is released into the urban space using a measuring device to collect data. The path to the smart city is the goal: What is the city around me? What role do I play in it? The staging of public space with digital technology reinterprets places, turns the spectator into a player and puts them in Kafkaesque situations. Experience urban space as a stage for virtual theatre. In Budapest@Play, you become the protagonist of an interactive story.

The performance can only be visited individually.

The single-person city walking tour starts at the lobby of Kolibri Theatre. It lasts approximately 60 minutes per participant. Tickets booked are valid for an hour. One spectator can start the play every four minutes, so please be prepared for a short wait for your turn. It is advised to wear comfortable clothes and shoes appropriate for the actual weather. The program will not be cancelled in case of light rain.

Kolibri Theatre (Hungary), University of York (United Kingdom), Teatr Ludowy (Poland): Traitor

An interactive detective game language: In Hungarian and English
17.05.2023. Wednesday - 3 pm
60 min.
Kolibri Cellar

The so-called “detective game” built on digital interaction is a one-of-a-kind enterprise in the Hungarian theatre scene: the spectators themselves shape the storyline with the help of a mobile phone application, thus influencing the plot by way of their votes throughout the entire play. The odds are high: are we to choose security or freedom, control or a future full of hazards? The topic of the show is the growing surveillance technology: the girl is in danger, hiding at the same time from her hotshot mother and a mysterious human rights activist. She feels that every step she takes is monitored. Shall the girl become a heroine or a traitor?” – the question is raised.

A natural science student decides to create a human being. The experiment is an unexpected success. Its creator, however, despairs. We discover that the author, Mary Shelley, is not entirely comfortable with it either. Throughout her life, she denies and downplays the literary scope of her work.
Between wireless headsets, virtual settings, real actors and holographic avatars, the show is a dreamlike journey into the novel and, at the same time, into the lived experience of its author, who confuses herself with Dr Frankenstein, the Creature, with the Work and the characters with memories.

Three stories open the world of the English northern landscape in virtual reality, what it means to come from it, live in it and belong to it. Monoliths interweaves radiant renderings of three northern UK environments – a moor, a city and a coast – with sweeping soundscapes and poetic monologues by Hannah Davies, Carmen Marcus and Asma Elbadawi. At once imaginative and immersive, this VR experience is an arresting testament to the inextricable link between person and place.
